A checked bag can make sense when the trip needs more

Consider checking a bag when you are packing for a longer stay, bringing gear, sharing space with a companion, or traveling through very different weather. The goal is not to bring more for its own sake; it is to make room for what the itinerary genuinely requires.

Ask four questions before choosing

• How many days will you be away?
• Do you need more than one pair of shoes, a structured outfit, or special equipment?
• Will you move between several places during the trip?
• Will you have time and space to handle a larger bag at your destination?

Use a personal item strategically
